Modern Shou Sugi Ban

Selected Product Descriptions

Western Red Cedar
With a straight, tight grain and very few knots, Western Red Cedar or Pacific Cedar is a favorite among consumers and architects alike, boasting a long and diverse history of applicability. The soft red wood of the Red Cedar is lightweight, easy to manipulate, and naturally decay resistant. That final attribute makes this species a perfect fit for Shou Sugi Ban and one of our most popular products. Canada’s largest tree, the Cheewhat Giant, is a Western Red Cedar.

Accoya
Combining cutting edge tech with the natural benefits of working with wood, Accoya is a treated lumber product devised to stand up to anything mother nature throws at it. Developed and distributed by a Dutch the company after which its named, Accoya wood is made moisture and water-resistant using a non-toxic chemical treatment technique called acetylation. Acetylated wood’s water repellent chemistry, in turn, making Accoya wood impervious to both fungus and rot.

Kebony
Kebony, too, combines science, market demand, and tradition to produce long-lasting and environmentally responsible lumber and wood products. Employing their proprietary timber treatment system that actually increases the walls of the wood cells by a massive 50%, Kebony has developed a state of the art product you can feel supreme confidence in installing.

Eastern Hemlock
The state tree of Pennsylvania, Eastern Hemlock is a species native to Eastern North America and was used extensively during the building of railroad systems in the mid to late 19th century. For our purposes though, the rough grain and creamy tan color of the wood makes finishing this wood an adventure worth taking.

White Oak
Another naturally water and rot-resistant species, White Oak is a long-lived hardwood that has for hundreds of years been the go-to species for woodworkers of all pursuits. Wood from a White Oak tree is among the strongest and is renown for being in dual possession of durability through time and an alluring grain structure. Our finishes highlight the natural beauty of White Oak and allow for the richness of the wood to elevate any project.

Red Oak
The wild-eyed cousin of White Oak, Red Oak is one of the most abundantly harvested and widely used hardwoods in the country. Its straight grain and easy workability make Red Oak a highly sought after wood for use in furniture-making as well as construction. The lively charr produced by Cinder’s Shou Sugi Ban process rests remarkably on the surface of Red Oak, adding depth to the spaces and structures it inhabits.

APPROACH

Cinder Wood Products is a lumber, siding, and wood products manufacturer specializing in the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban style of wood finishing. Both beautiful and functional, Shou Sugi Ban is one of the oldest forms of treating wood and naturally protects most species from moisture, rot, and insects. In general, the idea here was to create a link between the ancient past and the present. We wanted to convey that ‘the old ways still are some of the best ways’ by incorporating modern terminology into bodies of text that were broadly mystical in nature.

Owner, Jesse Paquin, is both a perfectionist and a person who prides himself on offering a wide variety of options to private consumers and contractors alike. That called for a fairly in-depth naming structure. Product descriptions, process descriptions, application descriptions, and a unique naming convention inspired by the Japanese language were all written and designed to create a one-of-a-kind product list that venerated past artisans and looked towards the future.
